Tradició textual i edició de l’Encomi d’Helena gorgià traduït per Vicent Mariner d’Alagó (1639) // Textual Tradition and Edition of Gorgias's Encomium of Helen Translated by Vicent Mariner d'Alagó (1639)
Abstract
The Valencian scholar Vicent Mariner d’Alagó was probably librarian of El Escorial when he decided to translate the commentators on Euclid, especially Proclus, along with a few related short works by Marinus of Neapolis (1638–39). He compiled these works into a volume, which he sent to the Sicilian scholar Martino Lafarina. Unrelated to the rest of the works in the volume, Mariner also included a hurried version of Gorgias’s Encomium of Helen, which is published here as an appendix. This article seeks to identify the manuscript used by Mariner and to demonstrate that it was the only manuscript he consulted, disregarding the translations of Pietro Bembo and Willem Canter.
