Abstract

Study and critical edition of La verdad encantada en el Castillo de la Confusión. Por otro nombre: Peste del Puerto, a satirical pamphlet published at the end of the seventeenth century and until now practically ignored by Cervantine criticism. Attributed to the pseudonym Ramoles Drangomon, the work parodies the universe of Don Quixote in order to intervene in the dispute surrounding the epidemic outbreak in El Puerto de Santa María in 1680. On the title page, the author presents himself as “court physician” to the Knight of the Sorrowful Figure, an announcement of the burlesque tone of the work, in which Cervantine literary authority is used to question the official diagnosis of plague. The preliminary study of the work offers an analysis of how the text recreates Cervantine fiction, contextualizes the treatise in relation to the medical controversy that motivated its publication, and situates it within the history of plague pamphlets.
