Recuperación del lenguaje silbado de la isla de El Hierro

Abstract

La técnica de expresarse valiéndose de silbidos es una modalidad del habla herreña que empleaban, sobre todo, los pastores de la isla de El Hierro para comunicarse a distancia. Se conservó en vigor hasta los años sesenta del siglo pasado, cayendo casi en el olvido a medida que iban desapareciendo la ganadería trashumante y la agricultura costera. Sólo permaneció de manera residual en el conocimiento de algunos pastores, y gracias a estos ahora se enseña. Este artículo presenta el trabajo de revitalización del silbo herreño, que comenzó recabando documentos tanto vivos como históricos. Siguió con la información profunda en determinados aspectos del silbo (sobre todo, lingüísticos y sociológicos) a partir de investigaciones previas llevadas a cabo por expertos académicos. Y ha continuado con la publicación en distintos medios, incluidas las redes sociales, de multitud de entrevistas realizadas a silbadores y a especialistas, por un lado, y con la impartición de clases de silbo herreño, por otro. En este sentido, la Asociación Cultural para la Investigación y Conservación del Silbo Herreño (en adelante, ACICSH o, simplemente, Asociación) imparte actualmente dos clases semanales a chicos de entre 12 y 14 años, las cuales tienen lugar en los recreos del IES Garoé, único instituto de enseñanza secundaria de El Hierro, así como en forma de actividades extraescolares en los distintos colegios de la isla y en la Escuela ganadera, centro donde se enseña a los futuros pastores. Asimismo, se imparten clases todos los fines de semana en los mercadillos de la isla. Todas estas clases son gratuitas. El principal objetivo de la ACICSH consiste en salvaguardar el legado del silbo herreño tradicional, evitando tanto iniciativas folkloristas como excesivamente normalizadoras. Se persigue aprovechar la riqueza y variedad de perspectivas que nos ofrecen los veteranos silbadores tradicionales, favoreciendo así el conocimiento científico del silbo como un objeto real, no como un producto turístico. The technique of expressing oneself using whistles is a form of Herreño speech that was used primarily by the shepherds of the island of El Hierro to communicate at a distance. It remained in use until the 1960s, falling almost into oblivion as transhumance livestock farming and coastal agriculture disappeared. It only remained in a residual form in the knowledge of some shepherds, and thanks to them it is now being taught. This paper presents the work to revitalise the silbo herreño, which began by collecting both living and historical documents. It continued with in-depth information on certain aspects of the silbo (above all, linguistic and sociological) based on previous research carried out by academic experts. And it has continued with the publication in different media, including social networks, of a multitude of interviews with whistlers and specialists, on the one hand, and with the teaching of silbo herreño classes, on the other. In this regard, the Asociación Cultural para la Investigación y Conservación del Silbo Herreño (hereinafter, ACICSH or, simply, Asociación) currently gives two classes a week to children between 12 and 14 years old, which take place during breaks of the IES Garoé, the only secondary school in El Hierro, as well as in the form of extracurricular activities in different schools on the island and at the Escuela Ganadera, a centre where future shepherds are taught. Classes are also given every weekend at the island's markets. All these classes are free of charge. The main objective of the ACICSH is to safeguard the legacy of the traditional silbo herreño, avoiding both folkloristic and excessively standardising initiatives. The aim is to take advantage of the richness and variety of perspectives offered by the veteran traditional whistlers, thus favouring the scientific knowledge of the silbo as a real object, not as a product for tourists.
