Fostering Well-being, Sustainable Tourism, and Ecological Values: the Case of Sicily’s Regional Plan
Abstract
Planning territories in the changing era we are experiencing require the adoption of innovative tools aimed at addressing new challenges (climatic, economic, socio-spatial), even within established and successful planning processes and tools.
In Sicily, Italy, this approach is being implement as a part of the Regional Plan (PTR), whereby the Planning Department of the region’s major universities, providing consulting services.
Referring to this consulting activities this contribute briefly explores the need to identify new development policies, within the regional planning framework, that can effectively combine well-being, sustainable tourism, and enhanced environmental and landscape values on a regional scale.
In detail, the contribution aims to highlight the innovative strategies adopted by the PTR, including the design of measures and solutions to strengthen non-motorized mobility networks and promote active tourism. These efforts follow an integrated planning approach, addressing environmental concerns as a core component.
A key focus of the PTR is the integration of non-motorized mobility networks with ecological connections, particularly within agricultural supply chains. This strategy envisions managing agricultural production in a way that emphasizes ecological sustainability and environmental health, aligning with the "One Health" perspective. This approach is intended to be applied broadly across natural areas, farmland, and other non-urbanized regions, especially those linked to the main ecological infrastructure. The goal is to reinforce this infrastructure and close existing gaps by developing resilient agroecosystems.
Main outcomes of this contribution are related to the definition of sustainable planning models and tools that balance environmental protection, economic growth, and social well-being. Results will also provide valuable insights for future planning efforts, guiding the next steps toward more comprehensive policies and integrated strategies aimed at enhancing regional resilience, fostering sustainable tourism, and safeguarding the natural environment.
