Abstract

O romance A Cidade de Ulisses (2011), de Teolinda Gersão, apresenta-se como umemocionado hino a Lisboa. A cidade, cuja fundação é miticamente atribuída a Ulisses,constitui o cenário de uma paixão escaldante entre dois jovens artistas plásticos, que duranteos quatro anos de vida em comum acalentam o plano de uma exposição sobre Lisboa.Partindo do núcleo fundamental da Odisseia – um homem que parte e deixa atrás de si, emlonga espera, uma mulher e um filho –, Teolinda ensaia uma actualização do mito,redistribuindo papéis e debatendo a possibilidade de uma nova Odisseia. Esta recriaçãopermite-lhe considerar o papel da mulher na sociedade portuguesa de hoje. 

The novel A Cidade de Ulisses (2011), by Teolinda Gersão, presents itself as anemotional hymn to Lisbon. The city, whose foundation is mythically attributed to Ulyssesconstitutes the scenario of a burning passion between two young plastic artists, who duringthe four years of their common life cherish the plan of an exhibition about Lisbon. Startingfrom the fundamental nucleus of the Odyssey - a man who leaves behind a long waitingwoman and a son - Teolinda rehearses an update of the myth, redistributing roles anddebating the possibility of a new Odyssey. This recreation allows her to consider the woman'srole in today's Portuguese society.
