Limited by Number of Morphemes, not Copied Segments: Multiple Reduplication and Triplication in St’at’imcets
Abstract
St'át'imcets is a language with variable multiple reduplication: multiple reduplication is attested, but only when the two reduplicative morphemes are realized at different strata. Multiple reduplication is restricted by morpheme: only one prosodic affix is realized per stratum. Variable multiple reduplication therefore reflects how prosodic affixes are distributed across strata, such that gaps arise when two types of reduplication occur at the same stratum. Segment-based approaches, which consider the number of fissioned segments or the type of input-output mapping, cannot differentiate attested multiple reduplication patterns from ungrammatical ones in St'át'imcets. They further predict that attested triplication patterns should be either impossible or as bad as multiple reduplication.
